Advancing Lifelong Learning Through Vocational and Entrepreneurial Training Initiatives
Redeemer’s University continues to demonstrate its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by creating platforms that equip students and members of the wider public with lifelong learning opportunities. Through the Directorate of Educational Services and Training (DEST) and hands-on student entrepreneurship programmes, the university is cultivating an environment where vocational training and practical education thrive side by side.
DEST: Opening Doors to Lifelong Learning
The Directorate of Educational Services and Training (DEST) at Redeemer’s University was established to provide educational and professional training opportunities not only for students and staff but also for members of the public. The Directorate serves as a hub for lifelong learning, offering training, workshops, and preparatory programmes that help participants develop both academic and professional skills.
Among DEST’s notable offerings are the Pre-Degree and Foundation Programmes, which prepare candidates for university admission and academic excellence. Beyond academic readiness, the Directorate also emphasizes skills acquisition and professional development, helping learners acquire competencies that are applicable in real-world contexts.
DEST’s public-facing mission, to make Redeemer’s University a center for accessible education and skill-building, aligns directly with the vocational training and lifelong learning objectives of the United Nations SDG 4. By welcoming learners outside the regular student population, the university affirms its role as a partner in community development and capacity building.
Empowering Students Through Entrepreneurship and Vocational Exhibitions
Within the university’s academic structure, Redeemer’s University has also institutionalized entrepreneurship and vocational training through its compulsory entrepreneurship courses. A highlight of this commitment was the 2025 Entrepreneurial Exhibition Fair, held for 200-level students under the course ENT 212.
The fair showcased student-developed products and services in diverse areas including baking, tailoring, coding, beadwork, photography, and skincare production, reflecting the university’s focus on practical, skill-based learning. Participants received both classroom instruction and supervised hands-on training before presenting their work publicly at the fair.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the initiative underscores the university’s goal to raise graduates who can create opportunities rather than depend on them. The programme’s structure, which combines theory, field training, and project presentation, mirrors global best practices in vocational education.
Linking Academic Excellence with Practical Impact
Together, DEST’s open educational mandate and the university’s entrepreneurship training model represent a twofold approach to vocational education and lifelong learning. While DEST provides a gateway for external learners and aspiring professionals, the in-house entrepreneurship framework ensures that every Redeemer’s University student graduates with relevant, employable skills.
This integrated model demonstrates Redeemer’s University’s belief that higher education should be both inclusive and practical, preparing learners not only for academic success but also for meaningful participation in the economy and society.
Looking Ahead
As Redeemer’s University expands its training and outreach programmes, there are opportunities to extend its vocational training further into the community through public short courses, certificate programmes, and professional workshops hosted under DEST. Such initiatives will strengthen the university’s footprint as a center for lifelong learning, ensuring that the benefits of quality education reach beyond the campus gates.
By leveraging structures like DEST and embedding entrepreneurship deeply into its curriculum, Redeemer’s University continues to advance the principles of SDG 4, empowering individuals with the knowledge, skills, and creativity to drive sustainable development and economic resilience
